Job fairs continue to grow in popularity as a face-to-face means of finding a job or career that might otherwise be limited to those who excel with the impersonal exchange of a resume and cover letter.

Everyone knows that finding a job through the Internet or in a newspaper can be a long and arduous task. So when a job fair comes to town, it makes visible many positions and company representatives. To make the most of these limited opportunities, you need to know how to “work” a job fair.

Dealing with Job Fair Stresses

A lot of people overlook job fairs because they think they will be crowded and confusing. They can be crowded, however confusing is far from what actually takes place. Job fairs normally position booths and tables of employers looking for potential candidates of their job listings, but they are arranged in a very organized way, giving all visitors an opportunity to participate.

That being said, though, you will only have a few minutes to make a positive impression on the employers at a job fair, so it is best to be well prepared how to handle yourself, bringing what you need to make sure that you get noticed over the throngs of people.

Preparation is Essential

First, prior to attending the fair, research the companies that will be represented. On arrival, locate a map of the booth setup and identify the companies and careers in which you are most interested. Visit them first!

If possible, arrive at the job fairs in the morning before the larger crowds show up and when employers are not too tired from the events of the day. (Employer representatives are human beings and for many, their interest in closing shop will increase as the day wears on.)

Secondly, bring as many resumes as possible to ensure you do not run out. Twenty-five copies is the minimum, but more is better depending on how many jobs appeal to you. Employers may ask for a couple of copies for different departments, so bring more than you think you will need. Once you run out, your job fair is pretty much over.

Looking Professional

Next, always dress in business appropriate attire. Always! This is not the time to “wow” them with your fashion skills. Employers expect you to come to a job fair dressed as you would for an interview because it really is somewhat like your first “interview,” regardless of its brevity. When you approach a table, be sure to make good eye contact and shake the hand of whomever you meet.

Always Be Positive

Keep your enthusiasm high no matter how long you have been at the job fair, and walk around with a smile - even if you have already spoken with someone, that person may spot you later.

Finally, be prepared to answer questions quickly with direct answers. Again, you will likely not have a lot of time to sell yourself, so you need to be able to make the most of the limited time that you are afforded.

Knowing and, more importantly, practicing these tips can help you turn a crowded job fair with thousands of people into a prime job at just the right company.
