When Health Care Professionals Get It Wrong
September 7th, 2008 by admin
Please don’t get me wrong here. Health Care is a serious topic and I don’t want to belittle the skill, professionalism and worth of health care professionals like doctors and dentists.
But for me they’ve got it wrong as often they’ve got it correct. So what do we do next?
Let me first give you an amusing example of how a health care professional got it wrong for me.
It begins like this. I had a cold and had a sore throat, so I took a well known lozenge to help my sore throat. But something happened and I swallowed it before it had dissolved. I didn’t choke on it. Something else happened which felt even worse. I got the hiccups. For 3 days.
3 days. Have you got any idea what it is like to have the hiccups for 3 whole days? Every bit as annoying as you would think!
However the real point is, I consulted two doctors and both of them had absolutely no idea what was wrong. It was definitely a case of ‘drink water upside down and leave me alone’.
So what to do when doctors don’t have the asnwers? The answer, I humbly suggest, is one has educate oneself about health. That doesn’t mean spend hours and hours reading healtcare journals. It just means paying a bit more attention and taking a bit more effort when it comes to our most important possession - our own body.
In short, we need to take more responsibility for our own health.
A teacher of mine once said ‘The first question I ask any physician is ‘I know my body better than you do. True or False?'’ If the doctor answered false, he wouldn’t let that doctor treat him.
And I think there is the crux of ensuring balanced Health Care. Know your body better than your doctor. You probably do anyway.
