Whenever our parenting experience becomes stressful two simple actions can essentially turn our situation around.

The first action is to raise the level of love and acceptance we hold for ourselves as parents of teens or toddlers and also for our children. The second action is to raise our standards in what we ask of our children, as well as what we ask of ourselves as parents with respect to holding our children accountable for their decisions.

When taking the two essential steps it’s important we take them both, and take them in the correct order. If we simply take the first step of offering love, we will have a blessed moment of peace in the short term. However if we fail to raise our standards and establish our boundaries we will very quickly find ourselves stressed again.

If we take only the second step of asking more of our children and ourselves but do not offer love and self-acceptance, the actions we take will feel punishing for all parties. With this feeling the level of resentment and disunity within our home will increase.

So whenever you are not enjoying yourself as a parents of teens or toddlers; if you are feeling critical, snappy or intolerant, ask yourself the following questions:
1. What can I do to love and accept myself right now?
2. What can I do to love and accept my children right now?
3. What standards do I need to raise with respect to what I am asking of my children?
4. What standards do I need to raise with respect to how I am holding my children accountable?
